THCP explained: evidence and German law

Key takeaways

  • THCP needs its own chemical and evidential assessment.
  • Preclinical findings are not proof of human safety or treatment benefit.
  • A product label does not establish complete sample composition.
  • German legal status and product-specific requirements must be checked separately.

What is THCP?

THCP, short for tetrahydrocannabiphorol, is structurally related to THC but has a seven-carbon side chain rather than a five-carbon one. Citti and colleagues identified it in a medicinal cannabis variety in 2019. Their work characterises the molecule and investigates preclinical activity, not the safety of commercial mixtures.

The researchers also described CBDP, a corresponding cannabidiol homologue. These related names should not be treated as interchangeable identities. Identifying a molecule in a plant does not establish how much every variety contains or explain all differences between cannabis samples.

Is THCP natural or chemically manufactured?

Both descriptions can apply at different levels: the discovery study documents natural occurrence in the plant examined, and chemical synthesis is also described. A natural trace finding does not establish that a concentrated sample was extracted from plants. Nor does it demonstrate that such a sample is safe for people.

Plant material can be a carrier for an added substance rather than its original source. The EUDA market overview explains why composition and production history matter for chemically modified cannabinoid markets.

Neither the appearance of a flower nor the wording “natural cannabinoid” replaces an identity or contaminant assessment.

Does receptor binding prove THCP is much stronger?

The higher CB1 binding affinity reported in Citti's study concerns a defined receptor measurement. It is not a clinical comparison of human intoxication. The frequently repeated “33 times stronger” claim turns an experimental affinity comparison into a claim about subjective effects that the study does not demonstrate.

Animal observations provide further preclinical information, not a reliable duration or human safety threshold. Absorption, metabolism, the mixture and individual differences may affect outcomes. There is no sound conversion between THC and THCP based on this receptor result, and no application recommendation follows from it.

How should THC and THCP be compared?

THC and THCP differ in chemical structure, and the THCP discovery study compares aspects of their receptor binding. That is a limited experimental comparison, not a ranking of safe options. It does not measure how two defined exposures compare in people or establish the effects of unknown consumer mixtures.

The gap between a receptor result and a person's experience cannot be filled by a promotional multiplier. Reports about uncertain mixtures do not resolve that gap either.

What risks and safety gaps matter?

Reliable human safety evidence is not established by the studies or related-substance reports summarised here. Questions about interactions, repeated exposure and particularly vulnerable people remain unresolved. A missing risk estimate is not evidence of no risk. Product composition must also be considered separately from the properties of an identified pure molecule.

The EUDA market overview describes uncertainties involving modified cannabinoids and mixtures. It is not a specific adverse-effect frequency table for THCP. A label or a cannabinoid-only assay does not establish the absence of residues, by-products or other active ingredients.

For severe symptoms, unconsciousness or breathing difficulties, call 112 and tell medical staff what might have been involved.

What is the German legal status of THCP?

THCP is covered by an NpSG substance group documented since 27 June 2024, as of 1 November 2026. The BMG explanation and Bundesrat document 202/24 provide the underlying context.

Natural trace occurrence does not establish an exemption for isolated or chemically produced THCP.

The NpSG defines structural groups rather than relying only on familiar abbreviations. Section 3 includes prohibitions on activities such as trade, placing on the market, manufacture and bringing covered substances into Germany. Criminal provisions have their own requirements.

A particular case needs assessment of the actual substance and activity; this is not individual legal advice.

Legal alternative: CBD

CBD is a separate subject, not a reassuring label for chemically modified cannabinoids. In Germany, cannabidiol is excluded from the cannabis definition in section 1 KCanG. As of 1 November 2026, that exclusion does not establish that every CBD product can be sold or that it is safe for everyone.

For information about CBD flowers, see the CBD overview. The sale of CBD flowers to consumers is legally disputed in Germany. CBD foods, including oils intended for ingestion, need Novel Food authorisation under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. A low THC result does not remove these separate requirements.

This section is not a treatment recommendation or a blanket statement of legality.

Where can you compare related cannabinoids?

Compare substances by identity, evidence and legal context rather than assuming that a similar abbreviation means the same thing. The cannabinoid overview explains those distinctions. It is a route to further background, not a list of recommended replacements, and its legal information concerns Germany rather than every English-speaking country.

Read the THCA guide for acidic precursors and the H4CBD guide for chemical modification of CBD. Neither natural occurrence nor a familiar starting material establishes a safe finished product.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. Similar names or shared origins do not make different molecules interchangeable. CBD findings and legal exceptions cannot automatically be transferred to another substance.

  • No established human safety conclusion follows from the evidence reviewed here. Laboratory findings or related-substance reports cannot fill the gaps in interactions, repeated exposure and long-term outcomes.

  • No. It can help identify and characterise a sample, within the limits of its methods and test scope. Legal classification is a separate assessment of the substance, product and activity.

  • No. As of 1 November 2026, sale of CBD flowers to consumers is legally disputed in Germany. CBD foods and oils intended for ingestion need Novel Food authorisation.
